Sciatica is a painful condition that occurs when the sciatic nerve, the body’s largest nerve, is inflamed. Often sciatica is brought on by a sudden event – such as an automobile accident or some other type of trauma. The most common cause of sciatica is a ruptured or bulging disk (herniated disk) compressing the nerve roots that lead to the sciatic nerve.

Symptoms of Sciatica
Sciatic pain can vary tremendously from person to person. Sciatic nerve pain is typically felt on one side of the body, but in some cases, can affect both sides.  Symptoms of sciatica can include pain, numbness, tingling, burning, weakness or a combination of the aforementioned. These symptoms can be limited to only the buttock, or travel the full length of the sciatic nerve into the feet and toes. In some instances, this pain can be so severe that it can render an individual immobile.

Sciatica typically lasts for about six weeks, but this nerve pain can worsen in the presence of certain exacerbating factors like prolonged sitting, standing, walking or frequent bending.  The sciatic nerve pain can also worsen at nighttime or after a person laughs, coughs or sneezes.

Diagnosis of Sciatica
In order to determine the exact cause and severity of sciatica in an individual, a chiropractor will first take a complete medical history of a patient and perform an comprehensive examination that will include a complete orthopedic and neurological exam. Chiropractors may also employ the use of diagnostic tools that can include x-rays, MRI’s, and electro diagnostic tests to determine the exact cause of your sciatic pain.

Chiropractic Treatment
Chiropractors can safely and effectively treat sciatic pain and in many cases, help to provide long-term relief. A typical chiropractic treatment plan may include gentle chiropractic adjustments, hot and cold packs, electric muscle stimulation, ultrasound, spinal traction or decompression therapy, and specific stretches and exercises that help to relieve pressure and strengthen the supporting musculature of the low back and pelvis.
